The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) is an international, award-winning technical society devoted to advancing the theory and application of film, television, video, computer imaging, telecommunications, and the related arts and sciences. The SMPTE currently serves nearly 10,000 members in 72 countries. Members of the Society are engineers, technical directors, cameramen, editors, technicians, and consultants; specialists in film processing, production and post-production; and practitioners from almost every other discipline in the motion-imaging industry.
The Society was founded in 1916, as the Society of Motion Picture Engineers (SMPE). The "T" was added in 1950 to embrace the emerging television industry. The SMPTE is now recognised around the globe as a leader in the development of standards and authoritative, consensus-based engineering guidelines to the worldwide marketplace. The Society serves all branches of film, video, multimedia, and computer imaging. The SMPTE supports the belief that by providing educational programs and promoting an exchange of technological information, members can advance in their profession and help to contribute to general understanding about the importance on industry technologies.
To accomplish its technical mission, the SMPTE organizes annual conferences as well as select educational forums, including seminars and tutorials. It also publishes the highly-respected SMPTE Journal, recognized around the world for its well-researched technical papers, tutorials, articles on practical applications, standards updates, and reports on SMPTE Sections activities.
2nd Anniversary Dinner of SMPTE HK Section (November 1996)

DTV and D-Cinema—the Final Frontier (9 November)
It was a temperate late autumn day and over two hundred persons attended the annual technical seminar titled “DTV and D-Cinema—the Final Frontier” held at UA Cinema in Tai Koo Shing on Hong Kong Island.
This November marked the 13th anniversary of the Hong Kong Section. In line with our anniversary seminar arrangement,“The D-Cinema--4K Solution and DTV--Mobile TV Broadcasting” was the title of this year’s event.
Dr. I Chih-Lin, Vice President and Group Director of Communications Technologies Group of Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (www.ASTRI.org), kicked off the seminar by a keynote speech on the overview of Digital Television (DTV) and mobile media trend. Mr. Kazuo Yamada, General Manager, FPD and CRT Engineering Department, Display Category, Victor Company of Japan, reported on the display trend and the advanced flat panel display technology for broadcasting.
SMPTE-Hong Kong Section and IVE (Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education of Shatin and Kwun Tong) organized the third in a series of training courses which focused on International and China Standards for Video and Audio Coding Technologies.
Shortly after lunch in the afternoon on 13th Nov 2009, hundreds of professionals gathered in the Grand Hall of Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) Kwun Tong campus, eager to learn about latest information/news of “Mobile Television (Mobile TV)” with respected speakers from China and Hong Kong. As usual, Mr. KL Lam, being the leader of SMPTE-HKG committee members, greeted the audience and related organizations that support this 15th anniversary seminar. Then, Mr. Danny Lau, Assistant Director, Regulatory Affairs Branch from Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA), opened the seminar by his key note speech, which announced that Hong Kong government is going to launch “Mobile TV” in the near future after the successful launch of Digital Terrestrial TV in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Section celebrated its 16th anniversary on November 12 by organizing a half day seminar on Stereoscopic 3D in Television Technology. More than 500 guests attended the event which was held at the Auditorium of the Hong Kong Design Institute.
The Seminar held on 29 Mar at Hong Kong Design Institute, not only kicked off the activities of the year but it marked one of the events that could took place as early as in the 1st quarter. Nearly 80 people representing by the major TV broadcasters and video professionals in Hong Kong participated the meeting. SMPTE Governor-at-Large welcomed attendees and thanked supporter and sponsors which included National Engineering Laboratory for Video Technology (NELVT), Broadcom Corporation, Telairity Inc and Broadcast Technology Ltd.
On August 22-25, the SMPTE Hong Kong Section (SMPTE-HK) participated in the Beijing International Radio, TV & Film Equipment Exhibition (BIRTV) held at the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing.
This November marked the 18th anniversary of the Hong Kong Section.
A part of the anniversary events was a seminar entitled “Emerging Technology with Focus on OTT, 4K+ and 3D,” which took place at the auditorium of the Hong Kong Design Institute.
The Hong Kong Section celebrated its 19th anniversary on November 15 and staged a number of events which included a seminar, a workshop, a mini equipment exhibition and a dinner party. The seminar, entitled “The Changing Face of Transmedia Entertainment,” was held at the auditorium of the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI). Local and overseas experts were invited to present talks on new developments and applications in the areas of OTT TV, UHD, multi-screen ecosystem, stratos jump project and second screen practice.
Mr KL Lam as Asia Pacifc Governor has attended the SMPTE Board of Governors meeting on Oct 21-24, 2014. The grand opening was almost full house, Mr Christopher Fetner, Director of Content Partner Operations, Netflix, presented the Keynote after the welcoming speech from Ms Wendy Aylsworth. There were a few people from Asia attended the event, a few engineers from SAPPRFT and Ms Penny Zhang, from Shenzhen Flat Panel Display Industry Association.
The Hong Kong Section hosted an IP/IT Technologies Workshop on 22 May 2015 at the auditorium of the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI). Two experts were invited to present talks on the UHDTV and Media Transport.
The Hong Kong Section celebrated her 22nd anniversary and SMPTE centennial on November 4, 2016 with a number of events which included a seminar, three workshops, a product showcase and a dinner party.
The seminar, entitled “Immersive Motion Imaging Technologies,” was held at the auditorium of the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI). Local and overseas experts were invited to present talks on new developments and applications related to 4K, HDR, VR and IP infrastructure, especially in OTT applications.
The Hong Kong Section’s 23rd Anniversary event was a two-day symposium themed “Developments in Broadcast Media Over IP and Immersive Technologies,” held at the Kowloon Bay International Trade & Exhibition Centre and Hong Kong Design Institute on 2–3 November. The seminar featured creative minds along with industry experts for a series of presentations and discourses with the aim to cover the development and applications of the latest technologies in motion imaging.
