SMPTE-HK Visit to LED Plant in China
(18 October 2002)
On the rainy Friday morning, eight enthusiastic SMPTE members set out to Huizhou in Guangdong Province, China, about 100 km north of the Hong Kong border. It was a site visit trip to the manufacturing facility of Lighthouse Technology Ltd., which designs and manufactures LED outdoor and indoor displays. Accompanied by Paulus Chan, sales manager of Lighthouse, the group toured the plant where LED video panels were assembled and subjected to various stages of tests before delivery.
According to Chan, the brightness of LED display ranges from 1,000 to over 6,000 nits depending on indoor or outdoor application, and the pitch of pixel varies from 6mm to 10mm depending on the size of the display. By deploying the latest 13-bit processing, the display is able to render a richer tonal scale, and direct pixel addressing provides flicker free images. The weather turned sunny when the group was led to a playground where a giant LED video screen was set up for testing. Members had the opportunity to compare the brightness of the LED display under the sun. Group photos were taken using the giant video display as a backdrop and all participants enjoyed the site visit as well as the trip.
