SMPTE-HK participated in BIRTV held at the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing (August 22-25)

Noel Leung, Secretary of SMPTE-HK, represented the Section to promote SMPTE at a booth provided by the organizer. An awards ceremony, a summit, seminars, and conferences were featured during the exhibition. The highlights of the discussions included digital cinema, new media, and three-dimensional (3D) production.

At the first China Over-the-Top Television(OTT TV) Summit, SMPTE Executive Director Barbara Lange was invited to deliver a speech in which she elaborated on the missions of the Society. She pointed out that with a large number of members from all around the world, SMPTE had organized numerous conferences and events for professionals in related fields to enhance their professionalism. These events have given practitioners opportunities to exchange views on technical issues and benefited students.

Lange also noted that SMPTE recently completed standards on the broadcast exchange format and interoperable master format, which could help develop and promote content delivered via multimedia and new media, including OTT TV services. Because traditional methods of content delivery have undergone tremendous changes, we are at a crossroads and have to focus our attention on the many new challenges ahead of us, Lange said. A case in point was the advent of the iPhone in 2007, which had increased demand for more bandwidth, higher speed of transmission, and more storage space for content. In this regard, SMPTE had made achievements in standardization to ensure smooth operation of new technologies. Cooperation between SMPTE and professional communities in China is important, Lange said, because new standards can be introduced to China, and China's standards can be propagated outside the country. Lange also spoke with local industry leaders to explore future cooperation. It is estimated that more than 55,000 people visited BIRTV, with close to 500 local and international exhibutors. - Noel Leung, Secretary
